Description
This quick cabbage with bacon and apples is a sweet, savory, and smoky side dish that comes together in minutes. With crisp bacon, tender cabbage, and tart apple, it’s the perfect fall complement to any hearty main.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices bacon, chopped
- ½ head green cabbage, thinly sliced
- 1 apple (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), sliced
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: pinch of caraway seeds or red pepper flakes
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving about 1 tablespoon of drippings in the pan.
- Add the sliced cabbage and apple to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6–8 minutes or until the cabbage is tender and the apple is softened.
- Stir in apple cider vinegar and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Return the cooked bacon to the pan and toss everything together to combine.
- Serve warm, optionally topped with a sprinkle of caraway seeds or red pepper flakes for added flavor.
Notes
- Use a tart apple like Granny Smith for a nice contrast to the savory bacon.
- For a vegetarian version, omit bacon and use olive oil to sauté.
- Pairs well with roasted pork, chicken, or sausage dishes.
