  • Author: clarawhitmore
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This quick cabbage with bacon and apples is a sweet, savory, and smoky side dish that comes together in minutes. With crisp bacon, tender cabbage, and tart apple, it’s the perfect fall complement to any hearty main.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • ½ head green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 apple (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), sliced
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: pinch of caraway seeds or red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving about 1 tablespoon of drippings in the pan.
  2. Add the sliced cabbage and apple to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6–8 minutes or until the cabbage is tender and the apple is softened.
  3. Stir in apple cider vinegar and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  4. Return the cooked bacon to the pan and toss everything together to combine.
  5. Serve warm, optionally topped with a sprinkle of caraway seeds or red pepper flakes for added flavor.

Notes

  • Use a tart apple like Granny Smith for a nice contrast to the savory bacon.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit bacon and use olive oil to sauté.
  • Pairs well with roasted pork, chicken, or sausage dishes.
